The Word of God is a Treasure

God's Holy Word

This book contains the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation,
the doom of sinners and the happiness of believers.

Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding,
its histories are true, and its decisions are immutable.

Read it to be wise, believe it to be safe, and practice it to be holy.
It contains light to direct you, food to support you, and comfort to cheer you.

It is the travelers map, the pilgrims staff, the pilots compass,
the soldiers sword, and the Christians character.

Here paradise is restored, Heaven opened, and the gates of hell disclosed.
Christ is its grand object, our good is its design, and the glory of God its end.

It should fill the memory, rule the heart, and guide the feet.
Read it slowly, frequently, and prayerfully.

It is given you in life and will be opened in the judgment and will be remembered forever.
It involves the highest responsibility, will reward the greatest labour,
and will condemn all who trifle with its sacred contents.

My husband works with a prison ministry and we have a friend who donates Bibles, lots of Bibles, to pass out to the inmates.  Some of them are from estate settlements ... most are gently used but some are quite old, worn, and tattered, like the ones in the photo above.  I cherish the older leather Bibles I come across.  They aren't allowed to have leather covers, or hard backs, at the prisons and jails, so I've collected a small box of those tattered copies.  Recently, I spent an afternoon looking through this 'treasure filled' stack ... one in particular had some scribbled notes, and scriptures that were thoughtfully underlined, as well as countless comments in the margins.  There, too, I found a four leaf clover, an old dried flower, a hand-stitched bookmark, along with a letter, and a photo from a loved one who had been serving in the war at the time.  It was an intimate glimpse into the life of someone who had spent much time alone with God there, lovingly reading, and writing her heart on it's pages ... and using it as a safe place to keep her most precious items tucked away .... seeing these 'remnants' of a life, makes this time spent so much more special, and I found that this woman was no longer a stranger to me.

Since I've been doing this, I often wonder what my Bible will say about me, to someone, someday . . . . .

I pray that this is an encouragement to you, as it has been to me, to spend even more precious moments getting to know the One who desires that we come to know Him so much more intimately! O what treasures we will find in His presence ... what treasures He longs to tuck into our hearts for safe keeping!

"God's word is a treasure worth laying up, and there is no laying it up safely but in our hearts; if we have it only in our houses and hands, enemies may take it from us; if only in our heads, our memories may fail us: but if our hearts be delivered into the mould of it, and the impressions of it remain on our souls, it is safe."

God's Amazing Grace

Once I knew what it was to rest upon the rock of God's promises, and it was indeed a precious resting place, but now I rest in His grace. He is teaching me that the bosom of His love is a far sweeter resting-place than even the rock of His promises.   - Hannah Whitall Smith

This song, deeply, spoke to my heart today ... how precious is the amazing gift of God's Grace to each of us!

Absolute Surrender

Life ..... circumstances ..... all the noise, and the distractions! So much around us these days can cause us to 'drift' off course, taking our eyes off of the one thing, the only thing, that can help us through every care that burdens us.  I've been guilty of that, lately ... I've allowed things going on in my life to separate me from the peace I so desperately need to get me through each day.  We need to get back on course ... back to the heart of worship, the power of prayer, and soaking in God's Holy Word ... that's where we will find the place of calm in the midst of the turmoil that surrounds us.

I recently read a 'gentle reminder' of that ..... it spoke directly to my heart, and, I am now, once again, focused on what really matters.  Oh, yes, I will probably fail again, and drift off course, as I so often have before, but, I've come to know that the anchor of God's Word holds, and will bring me back to a safe harbor, once again! If you're struggling in this area, as I have been, I pray this will help to bring you back to your place of calm in the midst of your turmoil .... absolute surrender, right into the gentle, loving, presence of God!

Drifting
by Gail Rodgers

Do you ever feel like your faith and trust in God begins to waiver?

Do you feel doubt nibble at your heart and mind?  It happens to all of us at one point or another through life.

Frustration and discouragement are usually the result.
When that happens we often begin to neglect praying, quietly wondering if it makes any difference after all.

Sometimes gathering with other believers begins to slip by as well.

God understands how fragile we can be and how our faith can waiver.
That’s why He addresses it so specifically in His word, the Bible.

“Faith comes from hearing and hearing by the Word of God.” (Romans 10:17, NIV)

If we want our faith to be strengthened it is clear that we must not neglect God’s Word in our lives.

A lukewarm heart toward God’s word and a doubting mind go hand in hand.

Don’t let yourself drift away from God’s Word.

Don’t let your Bible go unopened for days.

To grow in your faith you must expose yourself to God’s truths in the Bible.
You can’t know what God has to say to you if you’re not in His word.
When you are in a valley it is especially important to give God opportunity to speak to you.

If doubt in your God is invading your heart and mind these days, do a check. Where is your Bible?
Chances are you have allowed your heart and your relationship with God to become lukewarm.
Lukewarm-ness and doubting are partners.

Spend time reading God’s Word.  Start in the book of John, or a Psalm a day, along with a Proverb, or use a good devotional book based on Scripture.  Always ask God’s Spirit to open your heart, and mind, to receive what He has to show you.  Take some time and let God know the discouragements of your heart and ask Him to speak to you.  Your faith will grow as you hear and believe the Word of God.

Heavenly Father, I confess that I have left my Bible unopened and my heart has become lukewarm. Forgive me and help me to increase my faith by spending time in Your Word. Please speak to me by the power of Your Holy Spirit as I make a fresh commitment to keep Your Word central in my life. Make it real and alive to me as I seek to apply it to my circumstances today. Till up the hard ground in my heart and let the seeds of faith fall in soft soil once again. Thank you that You care about my faith!

We Are God's Workmanship .... Nothing Less!!

Am I growing or eroding in who I am becoming?

A wise woman grows in understanding who she really is.
A woman who knows how God sees her is confident in her identity.
She knows God made her just the way she is and for specific tasks.

She does not compare the inside of herself with other women.
She makes the effort to grow in her knowledge of the truth of what God says about her.

A woman who understands who she is in God’s sight knows she is:

Accepted    (Ephesians 1:5)
Secure        (Philippians 1:6)
Significant   (John 15:16)

Her identity is not bound up in what she has, how she looks, or what she wears.
Her identity is secured in who she is as a beloved child of God.

“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works,
which God prepared in advance for us to do”  (Ephesians 2:10).

Read Psalm 139 and ask God to fill your heart with the knowledge of just how treasured you are to Him.
Ask Him to help you grow in your understanding of who you really are!

Father God,
Sometimes it’s hard for me to think of myself as a piece of Your artwork – created to be just who I am. Help me to embrace the knowledge of who You say I am! I know all too well the weaknesses in me. I invite You to use these very things that I dislike in me to be the entry points of Your strength and power in my Iife. I know You have things for me to do that go beyond this “to do” list of mine. Help me to be ready to give a kind word or a hug to someone today. Show me who You want to touch through me. Help me to live as an accepted, secure and significant child of the Almighty God today by the power of Your Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

Worship

Worship is the submission of all our nature to God.
It is the quickening of conscience by his holiness,
the nourishment of the mind with his truth,
the purifying of the imagination of his beauty,
the opening of the heart to his love,
the surrender of the will to his purpose.

Be Heavenly Minded ...

Set your mind on things above,
not on things on the earth.

The Steps of a Good Man ....

2010 ... A new year ... a new beginning ...
it's not just once a year that we can start again, with a "clean slate" ...
for the Word tells us that His mercies are new EVERY morning!

It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.
They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
~ Lamentations 3:22-23 ~

He orders your steps each new day ...

Cause me to hear thy loving-kindness in the morning;
for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way in which I should walk;
for I lift up my soul to thee.
~ Psalm 143:8 ~

In this new year,
my heart's desire is to walk in God’s wisdom,
and His perfect will ...
Lord and God, You are worthy to receive glory and honor and power,
for You created all things,
and by Your will they were created and have their being.
You adopted me as Your child through Jesus Christ,
in accordance with Your pleasure and will.
I pray that I may be active in sharing my faith,
so that I will have a full understanding of every good thing I have in Christ.
Father, I ask You to give me a complete understanding of what You want to do in my life,
and I ask You to make me wise with spiritual wisdom.
Then the way I live will always honor and please You, and I will continually do good,
kind things for others. All the while, I will learn to know You better and better.
I roll my works upon You, Lord, and You make my thoughts agreeable to Your will,
so my plans are established and succeed.
You direct my steps and make them sure.
I understand and firmly grasp what the will of the Lord is for I am not vague,
thoughtless, or foolish.
I stand firm and mature in spiritual growth,
convinced and fully assured in everything willed by God.
Father, You have destined and appointed me to come progressively to know Your will —
that is to perceive, to recognize more strongly and clearly,
and to become better and more intimately acquainted with Your will.

I thank You, Father, for the Holy Spirit Who abides permanently in me
and Who guides me into all the truth —
the whole, full truth —
and speaks whatever He hears from the Father and announces
and declares to me the things that are to come.
I have the mind of Christ and hold the thoughts, feelings, and purposes of His heart.
So, Father, I have entered into that blessed rest by adhering to, trusting in,
and relying on You, in the
name of Jesus. Hallelujah!
. Amen .

P.S. Those are my dear husband's feet ... He's a good man, and I am blessed!
